History of the property
The house
was built in the early seventies by Donn Groom, one of the sons of Arthur
Groom, co-founder of Binna Burra Lodge. The house was designed by Brisbane
architect Robin Spencer, using some of Frank Lloyd Wright's principles,
such as an organic appearance, natural materials, an unobtrusive front
entrance opening to a grand space. Donn built the 6 massive rock walls
without cranes or heavy machinery. Then he employed carpenters to complete
the building around the rock walls. Since 1975 the house has been the
home of Donn's brother, Tony, and his family. This year, it is available
for the first time for holiday rentals

"Is
it possible to lose your heart to a house? If so, I'm in love, for Alcheringa,
about 500m from Binna Burra Mountain Lodge, is possibly the most perfect
holiday location I've ever stayed in." Alison Cotes, Travel Writer,
The Sunday Mail.

"This was a spectacular place to visit! The owner went out of his
way to accommodate us on short notice and we were rewarded on the last
day by waking up early to find a koala with a baby in the tree on the
deck in front of the house! The views were gorgeous, the birdlife exciting
and just the most relaxing and tranquil place to enjoy!Lots of great books-wish
we could stay a month!"

"It was the most spectacular setting for a group of 8 people to celebrate
a 40th birthday. The house is stunning and timeless as well as friendly
and warm. The views are breaktaking! There was plenty of space for everyone
and the kitchen was well stocked with everthing we needed. The bushwalks
were close by, there were heaps of CD's to listen to and everyone had
a fantastic 6 nights! Thank you Tony!"

"We had the pleasure of staying at Alcheringa for our annual girls
get together. The four of us found this house to be the perfect place
to excape the daily grind where you can do as little or as much as you
like. There was lots of laughter, loads of good food prepared in the huge
well appointed kitchen and a few glasses of wine enjoyed while mixed with
the beautiful scenery and bird life. The bush walks are amazing and cater
for all levels of fitness. The house is very comfortable and easy to make
your own for the time you are there. This would also be a great place
for families or as a couples retreat. Thank you Tony for the lovely bottle
of wine, chocolates & marshmellows."

"From the moment you open the front door and walk into this beautiful
open space till the moment you leave you feel at home in this house. My
partner and i shared this house for our anniversary and it truely was
the ideal romantic setting; with an open fire place to cozy up to, the
bedroom and bath which overlook the mountains of lamington national park
and simply being so far away from everything you feel like you are the
only people on the planet. we also managed to fit in a few walks within
the park (the caves walk is wotrth doing and not too long) and some wine
tasting at O'Reilly's vineyard between lazing around cooking bbq's, drinking
champagne and taking in our surroundings. Tony, the owner of the house
was very helpful with all our enquiries and made our stay very enjoyable.
Alcheringa exceeded our expectations and is definately a worth while escape
destination, not just for couples but for families also. Thankyou Tony
for a memorable first anniversary. :-) we would love to come back and
stay again in the future. Lauren and Wade"
