The Park

Lamington lies on the Scenic Rim, a chain of mountains stretching across the Queensland-New South Wales border.

Covering ranges and valleys near the New South Wales border, the 20,600ha park is a sanctuary for native plants and animals. Lamington protects precious remnants of once widespread subtropical rain forest.

Declared in 1915, Lamington National Park boasts extensive walking tracks along the McPherson Range, which allow visitors to explore the area’s forests, creeks and waterfalls. Dramatic lookouts afford views over the Gold Coast, south-east Queensland and northern New South Wales.

Lamington is part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area, which includes the most extensive areas of subtropical rainforest in the world, most of the world’s warm temperate rainforest and nearly all of the Antarctic beech (Nothofagus moorei) cool temperate rainforest.

Which is the best season for Lamington? Whenever you can get here.

Summer (Nov - Jan) offers the warmest weather of course, plus swimming in refreshing mountain pools, the possibility of afternoon thunderstorms (spectacular from the deck). The mountain is always 5 degrees cooler than Brisbane or the coast and the nights are cool.

Autumn (Feb - April) is officially the wet season with the possibility of extended rain periods however it also offers the best season for photography with the rainforest at its best, an amazing variety of colourful fungi and berries, and between the wet spells - probably the best weather of the year - April is one of our favourite months.

Winter (May - July) has chilly nights and usually sunny clear days. The house has an open fireplace, a free standing stove and electric heaters. Another advantage of winter is the absence of snakes, ticks and leeches.

Spring (August - October) is for wildflowers especially on the Daves Creek and Shipstern tracks plus extra activity in the bird world. (Some of the best birdwatching is from the kitchen window)
